Audiovisual production in Morocco: definition, stages and roles

Audiovisual production is the whole body of work that turns an intention — making a company known, launching a product, telling the story of a project — into a finished, broadcastable film. It covers conception, organisation, shooting, editing and delivery.

The word "production" has two meanings that often get confused: the craft as a whole, and one of its functions — the one that gathers the resources, holds the budget and the schedule. A production company — also called a production house or studio — is the business that carries both.

The five stages of an audiovisual production

1. Scoping

Objective of the film, target audience, core message, where it will run, languages, delivery date, budget. It is the shortest stage and the most expensive one to rush: anything not decided here gets decided later, on set, at the cost of a crew day.

2. Pre-production

Concept, script or interview outline, location scouting, any casting, permits, shooting schedule, choice of crew and equipment. A well-prepared shoot runs without surprises — that is the point.

3. The shoot

Directing, image, lighting, sound, directing the people on camera. It is the most visible stage and often the shortest: one or a few days, for weeks of preparation and editing.

4. Post-production

Logging, editing, music and sound design, mixing, colour grading, graphics or motion design, subtitles, then the approval rounds with the client.

5. Delivery and versions

A master, then the useful versions: vertical and square formats for social media, short cuts, language versions, files for event screens. What must be delivered is planned at stage 1, not at the end.

The roles on a production crew

The producer

Carries the project: budget, schedule, crew, client relationship, permits, rights. They are the one who answers if something goes wrong.

The director

Decides what you see and hear: shot breakdown, framing, directing the people filmed, choices in the edit. On a corporate film, they translate a message into images.

The image and sound crew

Director of photography, camera operators, gaffers and grips for the lighting, sound engineer. Its size depends on the setup: two people for an interview, a full crew for a commercial.

Post-production

Editor, colourist, mixer, motion designer. In some structures these functions are outsourced; in others they sit in the same team as the directing.

What a production company does — and does not do

It makes the film end to end

A production company takes an objective and delivers a finished film, with the human and technical means to get there. That is what sets it apart from a freelance videographer, who first sells their own work, and from a communications agency, which sells a strategy and often outsources the making.

It does not sell a running time

A film's price does not depend on its minutes but on the setup: shooting days, locations, crew size, level of post-production, versions. At EL 25 Studio Production, a film ranges from about 15,000 to 300,000 dirhams depending on that setup.

It does not guarantee views

It commits to a film, deliverables and a date. Distribution, targeting and media buying are the business of digital agencies and media houses.

Audiovisual production in Morocco

Casablanca concentrates the supply

Most of the country's production companies are based in Casablanca and travel to shoot elsewhere: Rabat, Tangier, Marrakech, Agadir. The address matters less than how the travel is organised.

Language is a production choice

Arabic, Darija, French, English: in Morocco the same film is often delivered in several versions. The choice changes the interview writing and the edit, so it is made before the shoot.

Permits are prepared

Filming in public space, on an industrial site or with a drone requires permits that take time. They are part of pre-production, not of the shooting day.

An example: EL 25 Studio Production

Based in Casablanca, the studio has been producing for over 12 years and has more than 500 videos to its name: corporate and institutional films, commercials, music videos, brand content. Directing and post-production sit in the same team, led by Achraf Mounaji, director and producer.

Frequently asked questions

What is audiovisual production?

It is the whole body of work that leads from an intention to a finished film: scoping the objective, pre-production (script, scouting, schedule), the shoot, post-production (editing, sound, grading, subtitles) and delivery of the different versions. The word also refers to the function that gathers the resources and holds the budget.

What are the stages of an audiovisual production?

Five stages: scoping (objective, audience, distribution, budget), pre-production (concept, script, scouting, permits, schedule), the shoot, post-production (editing, music, mixing, grading, graphics) and delivery with its versions (formats, languages, short cuts).

What is the difference between a production company and a communications agency?

A production company makes the film end to end, with its own directing, shooting and post-production means. A communications agency designs a strategy and campaigns, and often calls on a production company to make the films. The two work together regularly.

How much does audiovisual production cost in Morocco?

It depends on the setup, not on the film's length. At EL 25 Studio Production, a production company based in Casablanca, a film ranges from about 15,000 to 300,000 dirhams depending on the shooting days, locations, crew, post-production and versions required.

How long does an audiovisual production take?

The shoot itself often lasts one to a few days. The whole — scoping, preparation, shooting, editing and approvals — is counted in weeks, and depends above all on how quickly the client approves each stage.
